As one of the largest asset classes held by UK pension funds, understanding opportunities in fixed income is in focus for almost all trustees. At this morning workshop, we will breakout into two Investment Masterclasses to hear the latest thinking from some forward-thinking asset managers. We will then examine the questions pension funds should be asking as they map out their ‘end game’, as many are working out how to partially (or fully) transfer their liabilities to an insurer. This unique half day workshop is accredited by the Pensions Management Institute and is open to pension funds and their advisors.

Masterclass I - Multi-Asset Credit: Capturing Opportunities and minimising Volatility in Alternative Credit Markets - Craig Scordellis, CQS
Alternative Credit allows investors to de-risk away from equities while maintaining attractive expected risk-adjusted returns. Multi-Asset Credit (MAC) inviting enables tactical and dynamic asset allocation to profit from a broad range of opportunities, mitigate risk and manage duration. This investment Masterclass will explain how deep fundamental research and agile portfolio management are essential to MAC investing.
Masterclass II - European Leveraged Finance - Lessons Learnt Through The Credit Cycle - Michiel von Saher, PGIM Fixed Income
Drawing on more than 20 years investment experience within Fixed Income Credit Research, Mr. Michiel von Saher shares anecdotal reflections of the evolving European Leveraged Finance Market. He compares the key characteristics of the public and private markets, discusses his perspectives of the credit cycle and the development of the market, and explores how in-depth credit research can find relative value opportunities in an evolving, and at times challenging, environment.

Masterclass III - Systematic Investing in Fixed Income and High Yield Credit Markets
Tony Gould | AQR Compared with equity investing, bond investing can seem stuck in the dark ages. As asset managers use new technology to trade shares automatically, bond-fund managers still often call traders by phone. Systematic Investing, though now widely used within equities, is both effective and underutilized in credit. Tony will explain how investors may be able to achieve excess returns in the credit markets through a disciplined approach using these same ideas. Applying the same investment themes used in other asset classes to credit can generate attractive and diversifying long-term returns.
Masterclass IV - Navigating the Road to Buyout - Sammy Cooper-Smith, Rothesay Life
Cleo Taylor | Rothesay Life As pension funds map out their ‘end game’, many are working out how to fully transfer their liabilities to an insurer. In this Masterclass, Sammy Cooper-Smith will discuss the following areas and take Q&A on any topics related to risk settlement.
