The Defined Contribution Indaba* will bring together some of the industry’s biggest influencers to hear a selection of interactive keynote presentations. These will be interspersed with five Investment Masterclass breakout sessions which will cover key asset classes and investment opportunities, specifically tailored for defined contribution pension funds.



*An indaba (pronounced in-dar-bah) is an important conference held by the izinDuna (principal men) of the Zulu or Xhosa people. The term comes from a Zulu language word meaning "business" or "matter".

    Dawid Konotey-Ahulu, Co-Founder of mallowstreet provides an overview of the conference, speakers, and key themes for the Indaba.

    Professor Nicholas Crafts - This session will review a wide range of possible implications of Brexit for the UK economy. These will include both short and long term macroeconomic impacts. The possible consequences for the manufacturing and service sectors will be considered, as well as some aspects of economic policy.

    Jillian Reid - This session will give an update on the risk, return and reputation drivers for responsible investment, including the latest from the regulator and example actions being taken by peers. We'll cover ESG integration, stewardship, climate change, sustainable opportunities, impact investing and divestment on ethical grounds - all the hot topics, including tips on where to start and what to prioritise.

    Caspar Berry - As unpredictable events abound, the concept of uncertainty becomes more and more of a concern, particularly for anyone tasked with making decisions in such unknown terrain. Former poker player Caspar Berry brings the metaphor of poker to bear to it all and asks what we can learn from people who have to deal with obvious and undeniable uncertainty every single day.

  12. What People Really Think, Do, and Say About Pensions

    Michelle Cracknell - With reference to The Pensions Advisory Service contact centre, Michelle will share insights into what makes people call in (the trigger), what the call is about and what the actions are once people have received the guidance. She will talk about some of the big trends in 2017-2018, which will include the British Steel debacle as well as the calls received relating to drawdown, divorce and DB transfers. Michelle will also provide an update on the latest in the ghastly world of pension scams.

  14. Artificial Intelligence and the Two Singularities

    Callum Chase - Most AI researchers believe that the first machine with human-level cognition is likely to be created this century. If and when that happens, it will be closely followed by the arrival of the world’s first super-intelligence, and humans will become the second smartest species on the planet. Some decades before then, intelligent machines may well render most humans unemployable. If they happen, the arrival of technological unemployment, and then superintelligence, will be the most profound developments in our history. The outcomes can be wonderful for us – if we rise to the challenges they present.
