In this low-rate environment pension funds are increasingly relying on their equity allocations to help meet their liabilities. A highly concentrated global equity mandate, either as a standalone holding or satellite approach to a more traditional global equity allocation, could provide just the solution to access and capture the alpha many pension funds are seeking.SKAGEN Focus is a truly active (98% active share) concentrated portfolio of 30-35 positions, with the concentration of the top-10 positions representing approximately 40-50% of the portfolio. The investment mandate is open and broad which allows the team to focus on potential investments in all cap-sizes, geographies and sectors globally. However, Focus does have a bias to small and mid-cap companies and hence the fund has a set capacity limit of £1.5bn.The team employ a 'price driven' value process, seeking low-priced, high quality companies that the market has more or less ignored, and will not shy away from companies in restructuring mode, complex cases or turn-around situations. Over dinner, Lead Portfolio Manager, Filip Weintraub, will introduce Focus, explaining how the team generate ideas, analyse potential investments, and ultimately construct a highly concentrated and effective portfolio to generate competitive absolute returns with a controlled level of absolute risk.
