  3. Nature – A “New” Real Asset Class?

We are facing a rapid and potentially irreversible environmental crisis, rapidly losing our biodiversity and contending with unprecedented climate risks. Despite this, our economic system still doesn’t fully capture the cost of economic externalities like pollution and deforestation.

Over half of global GDP is directly reliant on nature but historically it has been treated as a free good. In recent years, we are starting to hear investors discuss “natural capital” and “nature as infrastructure”. Nature offers unique resilience and helps mitigate long-term risks. Should we think of nature as a “new” real asset class which can offer attractive opportunities for asset owners?
