July provided us with astonishing news stories. In the UK, we saw David Cameron leave Downing Street after 6 years, received our second female Prime Minister and brand new cabinet. And that’s just here in the UK! We have also been watching Trump and Clinton battle it out in their campaign trails, the failed coup in Turkey and the on-going discussions from the Brexit result.

As such, we have seen a high level of activity on mallowstreet.com and here we are sharing some of the key trends from community in July, and give you a sense of what the pensions community has been thinking about and researching.

Here are the top 10 search terms for July.

1. Diversified Growth Fund / DGF

2. Brexit

3. Deficit Reduction

4. Defined Contribution

5. Global Fixed Income

6. Fiduciary Management

7. Responsible Investment / ESG

8. Generating Income

9. Longevity Risk

10. Value Investing

Two discussions that we have been monitoring with interest:

The first is related to the new Government: What should be the top priorities for the new Undersecretary of State for Pensions. The key themes that are emerging here are ‘auto-enrolment’ and ‘simplifying’ the entire pensions system.

The second conversation is the community’s response to the TPR discussion Paper: 21st Century Trusteeship and Governance. The deadline for submissions is the 9th of September, so please go login and leave your responses.

Black Belt

At the end of July, we launched our brand new online learning tool for trustees: Black Belt. This is a series of17 short, multiple choice surveys which are designed to provide trustees with a granular appraisal of their capabilities and aptitudes when it comes to their role on the board.

At mallowstreet, we are working to solve the pensions and savings crisis by creating a centre of excellence for education and collaboration. Core to this is our ongoing support to our trustee members to help make sure that they are equipped with the information they need to make informed decisions, to draw on the wisdom of the crowd and help increase their self-awareness and self-knowledge to be better decision makers.
