The Association of Member Nominated Trustees will admit employer-nominated trustees, directors, scheme secretaries and other pension governance professionals as associate members, while former MNTs will be able to continue as members, in a far-reaching overhaul of the group's membership criteria.

The AMNT called these new membership categories "the most significant changes to its constitution since the organisation was founded", as it widens membership beyond MNTs for the first time.

It said membership and attendance at AMNT events will continue to be free, being funded by sponsors.

“Member-nominated trustees remain, and will always remain, at the heart of what we do. But it is more important than ever that those who share responsibility for protecting members' interests can stand alongside us," said vice-chair Lewis Brown. "Bringing associate members into AMNT strengthens our collective voice at exactly the moment members need it most.”

The AMNT said the changes reflect those in scheme structures and governance across the pensions sector, shaped by a shift to defined contribution and collective DC and accelerating consolidation into master trusts, which has reduced the number of MNT roles "and thus the member voice within pensions", the association noted.

The AMNT stressed its belief that MNTs with 'skin in the game' are best placed to protect the interests of scheme members but said it wanted to open its doors to others who share the commitment to members but do not have comparable resources.

"This expansion of membership categories does not represent a dilution of purpose. Rather, AMNT regards it as a necessary evolution, designed to ensure that as the pensions landscape continues to change, the interests of scheme members remain paramount and properly represented at every level of governance," the group said.

Is the AMNT right to expand its membership categories?
