The more than £11bn South Yorkshire Pensions Authority is looking for an assistant director – resources to join its team in Barnsley. Closing date for applications is 9 February.

The fund offers £93,559 to £102,865 annual salary for this hybrid role, along with benefits such as membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and relocation support.

SYPA is both a local authority and a pension fund. It has more than 180,000 scheme members and around 565 employers. Gillian Taberner took over as director of SYPA last October, succeeding George Graham, who retired at the end of December.

SYPA’s key upcoming tasks are:

The role being advertised has statutory responsibility as chief finance officer, overseeing the authority’s financial strategy and operations, its governance and democratic support functions, as well as the ICT services and a range of corporate services. Will Goddard is currently acting assistant director – resources.

The successful candidate must be a member of one of the organisations forming the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies and able to demonstrate up-to-date CPD. They must have at least three years of professional experience and a public sector background.

The fund is hiring as the LGPS and the local government sector more widely are undergoing significant change, including two pools being shuttered with funds forced to transfer to one of the six remaining ones, and draft legislation that would give the government powers to mandate pooling partners and some investment matters.

Full details of the role, supporting information and how to apply can be found here.
